Obituary of Howard Charles Hickin
Howard Charles Hickin, 96, died at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia on July 14, 2018. He was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada on August 19, 1921. He was the son of the late William and Charlotte Hickin. As an infant, Howard’s family moved to the Schenectady area where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and went on to attend General
Electric’s Apprentice Program. Howard began employment at General Electric and was drafted during WWII. He entered the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre as a quartermaster on the destroyer, Wedderburn, DD684. Following the war, Howard continued his employment with General Electric as a draftsman. Eventually, Howard worked for various local companies, before retiring in 1986 from Atlas Copco as an engineering designer. He was active in several local Methodist churches including, Shenendehowa United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the D.A.V., a member and twice past president of G.E.’s Apprentice Alumni, and 70 years member and 32 degree F&AM Beukendaal Lodge 915. He was active with several local bowling leagues, enjoyed golfing and was a lifelong NY Yankees fan.
In addition to his parents, Howard was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Brown Hickin; his second wife, Dorothy Droms Matis-Hickin; his brother Robert Hickin and his sister, Joyce Hickin.
Survivors include his sons, Craig (Larisa) Matis of Clifton Park and Kurt (Lori) Matis of Troy; 2 grandchildren, Karissa and Jenessa Matis; several nephews and many dear friends.
Howard will be remembered by all who know him as an honest and kind man with a quiet strength and a shining positive spirit.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9, Clifton Park on Friday July 20 from 4-7 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, 971 Rt. 146 Clifton Park, NY 12065 on Saturday July 21 at 10 am followed by interment in Clifton Park Baptist Cemetery, Clifton Park.
