Obituary of Suman Lata Jain

Suman Lata Jain, 73, of Latham, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, while being cared for as an inpatient at Emory University Hospital in Druid Hills, Atlanta, Georgia. Suman was born on base, on the first full day of spring, in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India, to Lt. Col. Sonit Singh and Bimal Rani Sambyal. Suman spent most of her upbringing in Jammu with some time in Samba surrounded by family.
Suman earned her master’s degree in Anatomical Sciences from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, her bachelors from Jammu & Kashmir University, and her secondary education from Model Academy, Jammu. She met her late husband of 45 years, Dr. Rajinder Kumar Jain, while both were studying at AIIMS; and they married in New Delhi in 1972 after graduating. Both Suman and Rajinder emigrated to the United States in 1973, for further opportunities and to build their new life together.  Suman spent several years teaching anatomy to medical students at Albany Medical College (AMC), while Raj completed his fellowship training in Endocrinology at Albany Medical Center.  As Raj forayed into his private practice in Troy and Amsterdam, Suman focused her talents on raising their three children and educating them with Raj through graduate school. And supporting all her extended
family near and far, which she did with selfless love and devotion.  
Suman lived her life with integrity and principle and expected those around her to do the same. Suman had a deep love for all that nature provides, like gardening or appreciating animals such as riding and watching horses or playing fetch with the dog.  Suman led an active and full life.  She was a woman of devotion who also loved to cook as a way of nurturing her family and so many dear friends.  She also loved to stay physically fit, no matter what it took and never gave up her drive for it. Suman visited new places all over the world with many friends and family in pursuit of the extraordinary. Suman had taste and talent for art, music, and fashion; she enjoyed good movies. Suman enjoyed sharing her excellent
cooking and hosting parties for family and friends. On special occasions Suman would sing or recite poems she had written for close friends and family.
Suman was an extremely loving and giving person with a great sense of humor and wonderful laugh that would light up any room. She enjoyed meeting new people from all walks of life. She was an active member and a pillar of the Capital Region’s Indian community and had many friends within that were like family. She was a patron member of the Hindu Temple Society of Capital District in Loudonville, and a dedicated practitioner of Hinduism. Suman was also a regular participant in Art of Living activities, joining her friends on road trips and visits.
Suman was predeceased by her parents, Lt. Col. Sonit Singh and Bimal Rani Sambyal, her sisters, Kiran  Sambyal, Sushila Sambyal Baloria, and her elder brother, Hoshiar Singh Sambyal. Suman is survived by her three children, Dr. Shalini Jain, Simi Jain, Esq., and Rahul Jain, her grandson Aarav, her sisters, Kamla Devi Singh, Dr. Kanchan Prabha Chauhan, Sutindra Kumari Kanwar, many nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends.
Last rites were performed in the Hindu tradition in the presence of friends and family on Friday, July 21st, at Oakwood Cemetery Crematorium in Troy, NY. The final day of mourning and religious ceremony, the Terahvi, will be held at the Hindu Temple, 450 Albany Shaker Road, Loudonville, NY from 6:30p to 7:30p on Sunday, July 30th. and will be followed by a dinner offering to the community—at—large. All who knew Suman and her family are invited to join.
