For those not able to make it to the service, here are the words I shared:
Welcome, on behalf of the Borichevsky and Brown families. My name is Steve Borichevsky.
We are very pleased that you have joined us in celebration and remembrance of Joan.
Today, I wish to share some insights into Joan’s life by sharing some observations her time with us.
Joan had many facets along which she enhanced her life and those around her with her creativity; as the individual self, her family, and the groups that she participated in. As a teenager, she was active in her high school, studied classical piano, and was a loving daughter and sister.
As she progressed in life, she met her future husband, Donald, who was in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. They created and maintained a long distance relationship by regularly corresponding through the mail. In this way she kept that facet of future family moving forward and subsequently, they married on May 25, 1957.
Thus began a new opportunity for Joan to create a family of her own. John was born in February 1958 and I tagged along in May of 1960. Therefore Joan was now the matriarch for three very self-determined men.
My earliest childhood recollection is of her baking bread for her two little men, putting up Plum Conserve, Jellies, Jams and pickles.
While she was very active in creating a life for the family of three very self-determined men, she was also interested in having a working life.
She began by working in real estate and then became a secretary at the local hospital in Granville, New York. This would be the foundation of her carrier.
While she took interest in her working carrier, she always had time for her three rather self-determined men.
As her carrier progressed, she became the human resource manager for a division of a large company. She was very interested in helping people with their lives. She felt that if you take care of the employees, the employees would have stronger interest in the company.
A human resource manager has to have some unique qualities. Joan helped many through difficult medical issues, marital upsets and other personal problems. She was able to balance the need of the person in front of her as well as the needs of the company. She particularly took pride in creating benefit packages workforce and made her company an attractive place to work.
I had the opportunity to do summer work at the company where she was working. I heard over and over again from many employees how she helped them through difficult times and they were very appreciative of her being there.
She often fought for the employees benefits in times when corporate America was cutting back on benefits. I cannot say exactly what conflicts she faced, balancing these two opposing requirements, but I do know that she felt that prosperity could only be achieved through the wellbeing of the employees, which included the management.
With the increase in professional responsibly over the years, she always had time for her three rather self-determined men.
My father was interested in specifying the construction of our homes. Joan played a key part the design activities, lending her artistic abilities to the interior designs of the homes that were built over the years.
Soon two of the rather self-determined young men were off to college. Joan began her academic interest and obtained her Bachelor Degree and shortly after, a Master’s degree in Human Resources.
Soon the grand children would come along and she was now crating family life as a grandmother. I’m sure to her great pleasure, she has three granddaughters to help balance out the effects of living with three self-determined men for so many years. She very much loved her granddaughters and was very helpful in their formative years.
In her lifetime, Joan has moved from Vermont, to New York, Colorado, Florida and back to New York. What impressed me was that each time she moved into a new region, she was able to quickly develop a large circle of friends to enjoy time with.
These friendships were very often built around creativity…doing arts and crafts, participating in Church Choirs, playing mahjong.
In 1987, Donald became ill and passed away. Although her strength was based on her ability to create, this was a challenge that she faced and it slowed down the creation. I was able to help her regain her creativity.
In a few short years, she brought Dale Brown into our lives. An excellent choice. She and Dale shared many happy years together. I certainly enjoy being associated with the Brown family, particularly Dale, a fellow engineer.
They enjoyed dancing, spending time at the camp in Galway and socializing with friends, neighbors and traveling to Europe.
As time moved on, bodies begin to impinge on the spirit and especially the mind. The creation slows down and eventually cannot be continued. Nature seems to intend it to be that way. Eventually, it was time for Joan to move on.
When one creates along positive purposes, those acts ripple out allowing others to do well, too. As you look around the room, the lives she touched are still here.
I can speak for myself that my desire to help individuals has been guided by her example and actions. I see in my brother, John, a man who has been recognized for his volunteer work as a ham radio operator, this seems to be the case.
And while she was not perfect in every way, one must remember that a social person she was very interested in the enhancement of herself, her family and the groups she belonged to.
In closing, it is our family’s wish for all of you in remembrance of Joan. Be creative. Flourish and prosper.
Thank you.
Steve

My Grandma Joan was such a special person. Even though I lived on the other side of the country, she had a tremendous impact on my life. She called me every Sunday for decades to ensure we stayed connected and provided me with countless guidances to help me make positive choices in life.
I will forever cherish my memories of visiting her for Christmases and summers. A few adventures we had together were The Nutcracker ballet, berry picking, skiing, sailing, hiking, cooking, and crafting.
She was amazing, and did everything you would expect a proper grandmother to do.
Grandma sparked my interest in crafts, loved me through thick and thin, and will forever inspire me to be the best version of myself.
All my love - Anastasia Borichevsky

Dear Dale,
Joan was a very lovely and loving person. She liked to connect with people through knitting, cooking, and Mah Jongg. She shared her knitting gifts with all of us. She started the Craft Group here in Sheldon Hills. Several years ago we each made squares that were then put together to make a personal afghan for Joan. Joan treasured the afghan. We will miss her.
I hope fond memories of Joan will help you and your combined families deal with her loss.
