Obituary of Rose Marie Schuttenhelm
Please share a memory of Rose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rose Marie Schuttenhelm (née McDermott) passed away at her home with her family on Sunday January 1st 2017 at 7:30 PM.
She was born on April 3rd 1936 in Rockville, CT. After moving to Schenectady, NY she attended St. Columba’s School where she was a cheerleader, worked on the school paper and yearbook, and sang in the choir. After graduation she attended St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1956 with her RN. While at St. Peter’s she met Alfred (Fritz) Schuttehelm and the two were married on August 10th 1957 at St. Columba’s Church in Schenectady, NY. They moved to Troy, NY where Rose worked at the Leonard Hospital. They moved to Waterford, NY where they had four children, before moving to Cleveland, TN, where their fifth child was born. They eventually moved to Clifton Park, NY where they resided for 45 years, raised their family, and made many friends. Rose continued to work at Leonard Hospital until taking a job in Clifton Park at a family practice. This work enabled her to attend to her children’s school and afterschool activities, which were important to her.
Rose was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Marie (née Walters) McDermott, brothers Leo, Thomas, and Francis, granddaughter Samantha Schuttenhelm, son in-law Charles King, and brothers in-law James Kavanaugh and David Pasquarillo.
She is survived by her loving and devoted (“all my love always”) husband Fritz—they had 59 glorious years together, who accompanied her on many trips throughout the U.S. and abroad, visiting friends and family. For 24 years they spent the winter in Myrtle Beach, SC and later with her brothers in Arizona.
She is survived by her 5 children, whom she loved dearly: Mary Schuttenhelm of Watervliet, Karen King of Glenmont, Richard and Mary-Ellen Schuttenhelm of Texas, Lisa and Virgil Hernandez of New Hampshire, and Thomas and Caroline (Stark) of Hartford, CT; her beloved grandchildren: Amanda King; Nicole, Danielle, and Kyle Schuttenhelm; and Isabella, Gabrielle, and Joey Hernandez, whom she loved playing cards and games.
She is also survived by her brothers James and Maryann McDermott of Rotterdam, Paul and Linda, and Tom and Dee McDermott of Arizona, and her sister Dee Pasquarillo, of Scotia, who was always there for her; her two sisters in law: Anna Kavanaugh of Troy, NY, and Cathy McDermott of Scotia.
Rose enjoyed and treasured her many friends and was especially close to her nursing classmates who will celebrate their 60th anniversary of their graduation in October to which she would like to be remembered.
