Obituary of Betty L. Tucker
Betty L. Tucker, of Troy, NY, died peacefully at home on May 14, 2026, after a brief illness. She was 89 years old.
Born in Luverne, Alabama to Lela Richburg, Betty came to Troy in the early 1950s, graduated from Troy High School in 1955, and made the city her home for the rest of her life — leaving it better than she found it.
Betty devoted herself to work with uncommon dedication. She spent 43 years with New York State Audit and Control, rising from keypuncher to retirement enrollment intake clerk. For 27 of those years she also worked every weekend as a receptionist at the Troy YWCA — a quiet testament to a woman who simply did not stop showing up.
But it was her character that defined her. Betty had a direct way of speaking, a generous spirit, and a finely tuned sense of right and wrong that she was never afraid to act on. In 1965 she was among the first people to picket the discriminatory hiring practices of Troy's banks — a courageous stand that speaks to who she was long before it was comfortable to be that person.
She volunteered with the American Cancer Society, and whenever she encountered someone in need, she didn't look away. She helped.
Betty loved gardening, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean art, whose artists she supported with genuine appreciation. She had a lifelong love of animals, and especially dogs — among them Inky, Blackboy, Stretch, Bella, Mitzi, Jess, Sammy, and Paisley, each of whom knew they were loved.
She was a devoted mother to the late Thomas Hayes, Felicia Hayes of Boston, MA, and Susan Tucker of Troy, NY, and was preceded in death by her infant daughter Debra Hayes. She was an adoring grandmother to Amani Ariel-Wamala (Jess) and Rami Hayes Messinger, and a proud great-grandmother to Nyah.
Betty Tucker was not a woman who stood on the sidelines of life. She worked hard, spoke plainly, gave freely, and stood up when standing up was called for. She will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, 565 Fourth Avenue, Troy, NY 12182.
