Billy was the friendliest guy you could know. He was a natural athlete who gave his all to every sport he played. Recognized and admired by students from all classes in high school, he could have been conceited. Instead it gave Billy a relaxed confidence and a reason to nod and grin at others as he walked through the halls. Crossing paths with Billy always brightened my day.
I met Nancy when she and Billy lived in Chester Park before they moved upstate. We'd chat in the neighborhood when she was out walking. I have many friends with happy marriages but I have never met anyone more delighted and happy in her marriage than Nancy. Lucky, lucky Billy. The great athlete had met his match. And Oh! What a match it was! Years later, talking to Nancy at the last reunion I attended, her eyes sparkled when she spoke about Billy, forever her favorite person. She spoke not of Billy's talent as an athlete but of how studying Latin in high school had left its mark on Billy.
Nancy knew Billy inside out and just plain liked everything about him and took it to heart. Two people capable of a great love found each other and lived their lives together. It made me happy to have a glimpse into their lives. When Nancy and I spoke, I could almost hear Mary Wells singing "My Guy" in the background. Billy was Nancy's guy from Go.
Nancy, Mrs. William Solimene, I am sorry for your loss but Oh! I am so glad the good person I knew in elementary and high school found YOU and you and Billy had so many good years together. You were and will always be the Loves of each other's lives. That Love lives on, an example to us all, a gift to the world. How great is that!

I met Bill in 1963. He was the star of the PMHS track team (he was a great hurdler) and I was a freshman who was trying to become a hurdler. Bill not only encouraged me, he gave me a pair of track shoes so I could run faster and improve my time. He was a very generous guy.
Bill also had a great sense of humor. I had written an article for the Pelham Sun about Pelham's football victory over the Pleasantville Panthers. The headline was "Pels put Panthers in their tank" (a take off on an old Exxon commercial). Every time I saw Bill from that day on, he would smile, look at me, and repeat that corny headline. We always got a laugh out of that.
Bill was a great guy. He will be missed.

Their last time I saw the late Mr. Solimene was at a track and field meet in the Bronx where he came to cheer on his granddaughter Lily from his wheelchair. We shared a couple of laughs and chatted while watching the young runners compete.
He was a loving and dedicated grandfather, and I know he will be so missed by all.
